Design Destination: Wall Clocks

Wall Clocks are making quite the resurgence in design, but this time, they are OVERSIZED. I have been seeing this design trend all over the place lately. Oversized wall clocks can make a grand statement on a large wall and can add so much character to a space. They can also look awkward and kitschy if not done right. Here are few spaces where an oversized wall clock is used to enhance the overall feel and look of the rooms.

O'verlays File Cabinet Makeover

As promised here are some pictures of my file cabinet makeover! I painted the wood laminate file cabinet white and added some interest to it by applying these O'verlays to it, which I simply spray painted silver.

It looks so much better! Don't you think?
Our home office is slowly coming together. I hope to share it with you soon.
I've had a busy week and I am looking forward to the weekend. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend too!

Surya Rug For Sale

Hello All! I mentioned in a previous post that I was going to upgrade the size of the rug in my Family Room. Well, I think I am ready to invest in a new rug and as a result, I am selling this practically brand new 8x5 Surya flat weave Fallon Rug from the Jill Rosenwald Collection. The rug is in perfect condition.

The rug retails for $385.00 and I am selling it for $265.00. Local Pick up only. If you live in Northern Utah and are interested in it, send me and email at thefamilyroomdesign@gmail.com.

In other news...I am taking my girls on a little Mommy - Daughter(s) date tonight to see this...

I have seen it before, but my girls haven't. They are so excited and I can't wait to see the expressions on their faces as they watch one of my favorite musicals of all time! I adore musical theater, and I am so glad that I get to share my fondness for it with my kids!

Stay tuned later this week for my file cabinet makeover reveal!

* UPDATE* THE RUG IS SOLD! THANK YOU!

My Weekend and Painting Wood Laminate Furniture

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I spent most of my weekend in the bathroom...potty training my son! :) Seriously, I hate potty training! It is so much harder on me than it is on my kids. With pre-school just a little over a month away, I had no choice but to buckle down and do it. Luckily, my little guy is doing really well and it hasn't been as torturous as I expected it to be. Since we wont be adding anymore members to our family, it is nice to know that we are officially done with diapers...hopefully.

Between my frequent trips to the bathroom, I did manage to start a small DIY makeover project. This time I am tackling a large, ugly, orangish wood laminate filing cabinet that sits in our home office. Although, I agree with my husband that we need a filing cabinet in our office to house all our important documents, etc. I was not willing to live with the one we had...at least not with the way it looked. Thank goodness for all the amazing DIYers out there who have taught us that wood laminate furniture can be painted. I found a tutorial on Pinterest and basically followed it. This is what our laminate filing cabinet originally looked like...

Like I said...yuck! So I got to work giving it a little makeover. First I had my husband fill the holes for the handles with wood filler...

After the wood filler dried, we sanded the excess off.  I also gave the whole cabinet a very light sanding with fine grit sandpaper. I then wiped it down with a lint free cloth to remove all of the dust. Next, I covered the file cabinet with two coats of Zinsser Cover Stain Primer, using a dense foam roller.

My cabinet makeover is almost complete. I just need to put a few finishing touches on it. Stay tuned for pictures and an explanation of the final product in the next couple of days!

Recent E-Design Work

I have been blessed with a steady stream of E-Design business lately. I thought it would be fun to share with you a couple of recent E-Design boards that I put together for a couple of clients.

This board was created for a client that wanted a neutral, sophisticated Master Bedroom, with just a hint of color...

These next two E-Designs were for a client that asked me to help her makeover both her family room and adjacent dining area. She has a young family and wanted a fun, yet elegant feel to the space and she knew she wanted aqua blue into both of her rooms...

Both of these clients were amazing to work with. I have asked them both for "after" pictures, so I will definitely share them with you when I get them.

E-Design is such a great, affordable way to have a designer help you pull together space that may be troubling you. The best part is, that after you have the design in hand, you can purchase the items from it at your pace and as your budget allows. If you are interested in my E-Design services you can email me at thefamilyroomdesign@gmail.com.

Ikea Ribba Picture Ledge turned Book Shelf

Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend. We are still enjoying our summer in full swing! I apologize for only doing one post last week, but my best friend and her kids have been in town from Virginia and we have been spending every minute we can with them before they head back.

I did manage to find the time to complete one project on my list (with the help of my hubby). One thing there is no shortage of in our new home is large, blank, gray walls, like this one in my little man's room...

While I knew that I wanted to fill this wall with something fun and colorful, I also knew that I wanted it to be functional. My son has the smallest bedroom in the house and every square inch needs to count. I've had this image saved in my inspiration file for quite sometime and I knew that a book wall was exactly what my little guy's room needed.

So I headed down to my local Ikea to and picked up 6 of these 45" Ribba Picture Ledges.

I then put my husband to work installing them in our Son's room. Here is what that blank gray wall looks like now...

I also decided to add some photographs and digital art prints along with the books to the shelves.

A little sneak peak of the stripes on the adjacent wall...

For $90.00 I was able to fill up and entire wall, while also creating a fun place for my son to store his books. I will rotate the books on the bottom shelf, since he can't reach the middle or top shelves yet.

BTW, can you tell what colors we are using in his room? I'll be posting more pictures of his room soon!

My New Home Tour: Family Room

Here are some pictures I took of our new family room. I love the fact that this room has a wall full of large windows and the light just pours in during the day! This room is coming together well. I ended up switching the West Elm Chenille Jute Rug for the Blue Surya rug that was in the entry because I wanted add a bit more color to the room. The rug is a bit small, but I plan on upgrading the size in the near future. You will notice that I have reused most of the furniture from my old family roomI think the pieces work just as well in our new space.  I added new accent pieces, pillows and accessories to create a fresh feel to the room. Overall, I am totally loving our family room, especially the board and batten trim we had installed on the TV wall.

Please forgive my less than stellar photography. I will have professional pictures of my home taken once it is all complete, but until then, you'll just have to put up with my amateur photos. Enjoy!

Our 4th Festivities

I hope you all had a great 4th of July! We spend the 4th every year with my hub's family and have a full schedule from morning till night. We started in the morning with everyone gathering at our house for a yummy breakfast that included everything from homemade chocolate pancakes to fresh fruit and traditional southern grits. Among my contributions to the breakfast was this to die for Baked French Toast from the Pioneer Woman.

It was delicious! Everyone raved about it. The fact that I was able to prepare it the night before, and just pop it in the oven in the morning, made it a real winner in my book!

After Breakfast we headed to out City's local parade.

My kids and their cousins getting ready to collect the candy that is thrown from the parade floats.

Me and my family at the parade. Why is it so hard to get my little guy to look at the camera? :)

Once the Parade ended we all headed home to let the kids rest for a couple of hours. Then we headed to my in - laws' house for a BBQ and water games for the kids. My contribution the evening's meal was this Corn Salad with Queso Fresco form Our Best Bites.

Once again, a complete hit with all of those in attendance. The fresh cilantro lime vinaigrette gives this salad such a bright taste. I loved it so much that I am making it again today and will be eating it for lunch! After dinner, we headed out to the City fireworks show. I didn't get any pictures, but the fireworks were beautiful and we all had a great time. Like I said, I love the 4th of July holiday. Spending the day with family and enjoying each other's company, while eating amazing food is the main reason why. I feel so thankful for the blessing of living in a country that allows us to enjoy so many freedoms and am also grateful for all of those who have selflessly fought to ensure that we will always be able to enjoy those liberties! Thanks for letting me share my 4th festivities with you. I hope your day was all that you wanted it to be!
