My Home: Basement Kitchen Marble Backsplash

Hello! Today I am back to show you a little addition we made to the kitchen area in our basement. It had always bothered me that the builder of our home opted to not put a backsplash in the basement kitchen area. I have wanted to change that for quite a while, but just needed to get motivated to get it done. Well...a few weeks ago, I got motivated. The first step was picking the tile for the backsplash. The cabinets are stained with a beautiful gray/green color and the countertop is a gorgeous white quartz with tiny glass flecks in it. I wanted to choose something that would look cohesive with both the cabinets and countertops. I knew I wanted it to be classic, but also a little fun. I went through a ton of options...classic white subway in a herringbone pattern...Carrera Marble subway tiles, white porcelain Moroccan tiles, etc., etc. I finally decided on a 2" Carrera Marble Hexagon tile mosaic. It was the perfect combination of classic and fun. I also knew it would pull out the gray tones of the cabinetry and also compliment the white quartz countertop.

After deciding on the backsplash tile, I also wanted to change up the cabinet hardware from a brushed nickel to antique brass. I purchased some pulls and knobs online and my handy husband installed them for me. Here is what the kitchen area looked like pre-backsplash and brass hardware....

and here is what it looks like now...

I love how it looks now! I have more ideas in the works for this area in our basment. Think kitchen island and herringbone tile! It's going to be really good, I promise, so stay tuned!

Client Project Reveal: Polished Piano Room Before & After

Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a glorious weekend. We had a weekend full of family and fun as we celebrated my oldest daughter's 10th Birthday and our 14th Wedding Anniversary. Both of these served as a great reminder that time seems to be passing much to quickly and to slowdown and enjoy each and every moment. I am certainly trying to be better that!

Today I am back with a rather dramatic before and after. For this project, I  was asked to tackle the piano room in my client's home. When I saw the space, the only thing I could focus on was the big red painted fireplace. In order to achieve the elegant and updated look my clients desired, I knew we would have to change it. I wanted to modernize the fireplace by getting rid of the tapered design of the fireplace breast (that is the technical term for the area above the mantel). I had my finish carpenter build a rectangular wood box, accented with wainscot, to fit over it. The entire fireplace was then painted white. The walls also received a fresh, new coat of paint. Finally, new furniture accessories and drapery panels were brought into the space.

Here is what the room looked like before:

And now...

It's amazing what a little paint can do! I think the new fireplace breast also makes the room feel so much more elegant. I think this is the perfect space my clients' to sit and listen to their talented kids tickle the ivories. It also make me want a Baby Grand Piano of my own!

Client Project Reveal: The Midlake Project - Restful Master Bedroom Retreat

It's Wednesday again and time for another local client project reveal. I have had the privilege to design multiple rooms in this client's home (I'll be sharing more soon). For their Master Bedroom, they asked me to design them a restful retreat using soothing colors. I knew that a new paint color and lighter toned furniture would help give them the look they were after. We chose fabrics that would evoke a calming feeling in the space, but still add the color and interest that the homeowners love so much. Here is a little look at what the room looked before my design...

And here is the room now...

I especially adore the drapery fabric and the mirrored nightstands. My clients have been enjoying their restful retreat. My client told me that her husband even makes the bed everyday now and he never did before! I'm so happy they love their new space.
